How to tell if an Instagram account is banned or shadowbanned

Banned and shadowbanned are two different things

A banned or disabled account is gone from public view: its profile page no longer loads, its posts are unreachable, and searches for the username return nothing. A shadowbanned account is the opposite: the profile loads perfectly and followers see everything — but the account's posts stop appearing in hashtag pages, Explore and search for people who don't already follow it.

The first check, always: does the profile still resolve? That single fact splits the diagnosis in two.

Step 1 — check whether the profile still resolves

Open the profile from an account that doesn't follow it (or a logged-in session that isn't yours). If Instagram shows no page, no posts and no profile card, the account is banned, disabled, deleted or renamed — from the outside, those four cases look identical, and Instagram doesn't label which one applies.

To do this for one account or a whole list at once, run a status check: every username resolves to alive (profile loads) or dead (no live profile answers).

Step 2 — if the profile is alive, test for a shadowban

Instagram never confirms shadowbans, so you test from the outside:

• Hashtag test: post with a low-traffic hashtag, then search that hashtag from an account that doesn't follow you. If the post never appears in Recent, non-followers aren't seeing it.
• Search test: type the exact username from a non-following account. A shadowbanned account often stops appearing in search suggestions.
• Reach collapse: in your insights, non-follower reach dropping to near zero while follower reach stays normal is the classic signature.

One failed test can be noise; two or three together are a strong signal.

What to do about each

Banned or disabled: if it's your account, appeal from the login screen or the form Instagram shows when you try to sign in. Appeals are the only lever — no external tool can restore a banned account.

Shadowbanned: stop everything that looks automated (mass following, repetitive comments, third-party growth tools), drop hashtags that may be flagged, and post normally. Most shadowbans clear on their own within one to two weeks once the behavior that triggered them stops.

Watching many accounts at once

If you manage a portfolio of accounts, checking them one by one every morning doesn't scale. A bulk status check reads up to 1,000 usernames per run and returns an alive/dead verdict for each — run it daily and compare against yesterday's list to catch losses the moment they happen.
